You do need to register your company name as a domain name, but it does not end there. Your company domain name will be what you use on your letterhead, email signatures, business cards, etc. But for SEO purposes, you need your website to actually be located on a generic, keyword-rich domain name. You simply point your company domain name at the same website using the DNS.

So, at a minimum, you need two domain names. 1. Your company name do whatever and 2. A keyword-rich domain name that targets the key phrase that will help you in your SEO efforts. That still may not be all you need. if you plan to build more than one website, ever, you should get the domain names far ahead of time to reserve them. You may also need to register domain names in other TLDs like dot net, dot org, dot biz, etc. to protect your brand.
